. the question may now be when, not if, the republicans will cave on taxes. joining me now is dana milbank, columnist for "the washington post." he's writing about the republicans waving tax hikes and cynthia tucker and visiting professor of journalism at the university of georgia. thanks to both of you for being here tonight. >> hi, reverend. >> good to be here, reverend. >> dana, are republicans really ready to cave? >> well, reverend, first of all, terrific particular to see you and ann coulter on the same page. they've caved already. they have said, we're going to agree to an $800 billion tax increase. it's entirely possible that they are going to go off the cliff any way. it doesn't mean that a deal is imminent. it basically means that they surrender. they used to say that they wouldn't give a dime of tax increase for spending cuts. now they are saying, let's go and do it if we can get $3 of taxes for spending cuts. >> the choice may be down to, do they make the deal before the deadline or do they let it go over the cliff and then come back and vote the tax cuts for the medical class

, washington correspondent for news week and dana millbank, columnist for the washington post. thank you both for being here. >> hi, reverend. >> so the republicans have a blue ribbon panel. do you think they are ready to learn the lessons of this election? >> i think that you can disregard everything these guys said leading up to the election because they talk a good game and they have to have the, you know, bravado and whatnot. now, they really want to be back in power. and they've got to sit down and hammer out what's going to get them there. the problem is, the party can't decide. half of them think it's because mitt romney is too liberal and wasn't enough of a kind of d distinction from obama and half of them think he was just a lousy kacandidate for others reasons and maybe may should have gone with -- i don't know. jeb bush? part of the problem here is that the party itself can't decide what it wants to be. they have to solve this identity crisis on some level. >> now, you know, dana, bill crystal has a weekly stand in. very interestingly, he puts here that they're in deep disarray, th

on here? let's find out. dana milbank has the right attitude, and ron reagan, a good friend of mine, an msnbc political analyst. i have to let you at this first, ron reagan. every time i see "gone with the wind" i see all these southern guys cheering, they can't wait to tell miss scarlet. miss car let, we're going to have a war, it's going to be great. and then the horror of 600,000 people dead including the burning of atlanta. then everybody says this wasn't such a great idea. now they're talking like secession is a good idea again. who are these maniacs? >> i'm sure all these people who are plumping for secession would call themselves patriots. >> of what country? >> real americans. >> well, good question here. so the way it works apparently is when democracy doesn't go your way, when you have an election and the other side wins, you throw the entire 200-plus years of the american experiment into the dumper. you have a little kind of hissy fit here. we've all been in groups of people where maybe eight, ten people and one of the people, one of the people in this group is character

test soon. >> dana, the chair of the house committee on foreign affairs calls this missile launch the result of quote, the obama administration's policies of appeaseme appeasement. i'm sorry to have to ask you this question for about the 9 millionth time. why can't the gop move past its baseless 2012 attack lines and try to think of something constructive to do with this kind of issue? >> right. it feels like -- and it's not just north korea. we heard the same on iran. the cowboy diplomacy saying be tougher. in this case what exactly does that mean? does that mean launch a strike on this nuclear power potentially causing the loss of tens of millions of people. what exactly is the alternative here now that north korea has been in this position since it gained nuclear power under -- during george w. bush's watch. so the notion of a sort of rattling during these times is not terribly productive. and indeed the argument is often made that the more aggressive the response is, the more it empowers the government in north korea. so less is often more in these circumstances. >> indeed it

that such is a good time to move forward on this. >> karen, if we can spich topics, this week dana perino told a fox news panel that women should, and i'm quoting her, make better choices to avoid being victims of domestic v violen violence. on thursday with the same panel she limited her discussion to just talking about domestic violence. what did you think when you heard those comments? >> well, a couple thoughts. obviously, i do not in any way shape, or form blame women, but the piece that i thought was interesting was that the panel itself kind of moved on from what was i think an important point she was making and then i think actually i heard s.e. make some of the same points earlier this week on "the cycle." we went right to the gun control issue and i think there are very serious issues about women and domestic violence. you have the violence against women act, reauthorization sitting right now in congress recognizing this is a serious issue. i would have a slightly different take on what she was saying, and that is i would like to see us find more ways to empower young women. we know domest
